Linux release: It's better than nothing

It's taken 1½ year since release, but Daemon Detective Gaiden 2 finally has a Linux port! This should be a day to rejoice, right? Well... it has some issues.

  • Gamepad support doesn't work. At all. I've troubleshot this extensively and all evidence points at Game Maker's abstraction layer not working as advertised: the lower level library picks up the gamepads just fine, but they get mapped to invalid device ranges and with button layouts that doesn't match neither the controller's physical layout nor the layout detected by jstest-gtk. I've tried working around this, but it's too messy and unreliable to ship. Just use a remapper like joy2key or antimicro, setting up additional keyboard profiles in DDG2 for gamepad players.
  • The game executable is created without execute permissions and not automatically recognized as an executable file type, so you'll need to manually chmod it before you can run it. Just a simple chmod +x on the executable should do it.
  • I've listed the package requirements mentioned in the GM official requirements guide as requirements, but the list is so pitifully short I'm pretty sure there's a number of implicit dependencies Yoyo never realized about that might cause issues.
  • There's no way to change the game's icon other than desktop configuration files, and that's not really a portable solution... so the game uses the default GMS 1.4 icon or your distro's default app icon, likely both at once.

If you can deal with these issues, hopefully the Linux port lives up to your expectations. If not... well, I'm as disappointed as you are in the glaring flaws.
