2020 Halloween Update!


Halloween 2020 is looming ahead, and the rotting leaves and dark nights got me in the mood to finally give this project the overhaul it deserved! The Ghostris 2020 update is a large overhaul that fixes all the common complaints and improves the game usability in a number of ways:

  • The game now has two difficulty settings, Dead Serious and Rest In Peace.
    • Dead Serious is unchanged from previous versions: every 13th block is a large formation that will mess you up unless you have a contingency plan, and several large and troublesome block types (bones, the letters RIP, etc) are part of the random lineup.
    • Rest in Peace is a new easier difficulty that only uses basic block shapes (tetrominoes, rectangles, crosses and corners) and also has an even random distribution for block shapes instead of the weighted distribution used previously. You'll still have to contend with blocks being haunted, but without the threat of certain doom always hanging above you.

    The two difficulty settings have separate high-score tables, and highscores from previous versions of Ghostris should automatically be converted to Dead Serious high scores the first time you boot up the Halloween Update.

  • The game has been imported to Game Maker Studio 2, improving compatibility and performance. (This also means it won't run properly on Windows XP anymore)
  • Misc visual tweaks.
    • GUI elements that overlapped were moved around a bit. (Preview blocks, GAME OVER text, title screen text)
    • The preview / possessed block now are previewed with the actual block sprites instead of just a shape and a color.
    • Possessed block is now grayed out if you can't switch blocks (you can't switch back and forth infinitely to stall for time).
  • You can now turn off the film grain / noise filter effect. If you're streaming the game, this should improve the quality considerably.
