Version 1.2.1: bigger- er, smaller and better than ever before!
Version 1.2.1 is a pretty small update, most notably because it's just 32 MB instead of close to 200 like every previous release of Daemon Detective Racing Zero.
Changes
- The game has been converted to GameMaker:Studio 2. This means it now runs on DirectX 11, and should have better performance overall. The drawback is that it most likely won't run properly on Windows XP and earlier versions (since they don't support Dx11 and some other newer APIs GMS2 is using).
- As part of this process, the API used to render things was changed from d3d to raw vertex buffers. I can't really tell, but this should improve performance on weaker GPUs in theory.
- I realized all the music files had defaulted to being exported as WAVs, this is the reason file size of previous versions was so huge. All of the music now is properly is exported as OGG, making the download 80% smaller!
- Some bugfixes with texture generation, these should all be behind-the-scenes stuff that you won't notice playing the game.
Since there's API changes that might affect performance and compatibility, please let me know if there's any issues.
Will you release a compiled version of the game that runs even better, now when you can use the YYC?
No. I've tried exporting a YYC-compiled version of the game to make performance even better, but this led to some amusing maths breakdowns that corrupted collision checking and general 3D-space orientation, rendering the game completely unplayable. Between GM's rudimentary 3D support and its nonstandard 3D coordinate system, I feel like trying to sort out the maths bugs is more effort than it's worth. The interpreted version will have to do for now.
